Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA)

Texas's education savings account. For 2026-27 a San Antonio student at a participating private school receives $10,474, paid to the school through the state's platform in three deposits.

Senate Bill 2, passed in 2025, set aside $1 billion for the program's first year. The Texas Comptroller runs it, and Odyssey operates the parent portal, the payments and the marketplace.

The award equals 85% of the statewide average state and local funding per public school student: $10,474 for 2026-27, at every grade from kindergarten through 12. Private-school accounts are funded 25% on July 1, 25% on October 1 and 50% on February 1. Whatever is left at year end rolls over while the child stays in the program.

Demand ran far ahead of the money. More than 274,000 students applied, and the Comptroller's August report counted 85,344 funded accounts as of July 29, with more than 121,000 students still on the waitlist.

The San Antonio region took a large share. Families in the Education Service Center Region 20 area held 10,495 funded accounts on July 29. Northside ISD residents alone held 2,271, the third-most of any district in Texas, followed locally by North East ISD (1,536), San Antonio ISD (972), Comal ISD (878) and Judson ISD (716).

A family that was not awarded has to apply again. The Comptroller has not yet set 2027-28 dates. Siblings of current participants go first in year two, followed by new eligible applicants.
