TEFA with an IEP (up to $30,000)

A TEFA student with a current IEP on file with the Texas Education Agency gets the base award plus a district add-on at a participating private school, capped at $30,000.

The add-on is what the student's home district would have received under the state formula for the setting written in the IEP. Bigger districts get slightly less per code than small rural ones, which is why the same IEP can be worth different amounts in Northside ISD and in Lytle ISD.

For 2026-27, a Northside ISD resident in a mainstream setting (code 40) totals $17,026. North East ISD comes to $16,989, and San Antonio ISD comes to $16,497. A resource or self-contained setting (codes 41-44) runs about $15,500 to $15,900 in those three districts. Our district table lists every San Antonio-area district.

Speech-only IEPs (code 00) add less than $1,000 in the large Bexar County districts. Residential-facility codes (81-89) can reach $25,000 or more.

A private diagnosis doesn't raise the amount. TEA has to have a current IEP on file, so families should ask their district for an evaluation well before the next window. A homeschooled student with an IEP still receives $2,000.

Totals are the $10,474 base plus the district add-on from the Comptroller's 2026-27 Special Education Funding Table, capped at $30,000. Funded counts come from the TEFA Annual Demographic Report (data as of July 29, 2026); districts with fewer than 30 participants aren't listed in that report. All San Antonio-area districts →
